I Love AI. But It’s Made Me Appreciate Human-Made Art Even More.
I use AI pretty much every day.
I use it to check whether an Instagram caption makes sense, fix my grammar, help me work out something on my website, bounce around ideas when I’m stuck… all sorts of things.
And honestly, I love it. It makes my life easier.
There’s also a bit of irony in writing this article because I’ve used AI to help me with it too. The thoughts are mine, but I’ve used it to organise them, fix my spelling and make sure what I’m trying to say actually makes sense.
But the more I use it, the more I wonder if we’re starting to do a little less thinking for ourselves. Have a question? Ask AI. Can’t work something out? Ask AI. We can get an answer to almost anything in seconds.
And as an artist, that’s made me think about creativity too.
When I paint, there are hundreds of little decisions that happen before a piece is finished. Colours change, things get painted over, I get something wrong, walk away, come back and try again. Sometimes the finished painting looks nothing like the idea I started with.
And that’s actually the bit I love.
It’s not just about the finished image. It’s the thinking, experimenting, mistakes and time that went into making it.
And I wonder if that’s something we’ll start valuing even more. When it becomes harder to tell what’s been made by a person and what’s been generated by AI, maybe knowing the story behind something… who made it, how they made it and whywill become part of what makes it valuable.
I’m definitely not anti-AI… clearly 😂. I think it’s an amazing tool. I just don’t want it to replace the thinking.
And maybe that’s why using AI has actually made me appreciate human-made art even more.
I love knowing there was a real person behind a painting. Someone had the idea, chose the colours, changed their mind, made mistakes and eventually stood back and decided it was finished.
In a world where we can generate almost anything in seconds, maybe something made slowly, imperfectly and simply because someone loves creating it becomes even more special.
